2019 releases: Magic Pie and Thieves' Kitchen

Magic Pie is a symphonic prog band founded in 2001 in Norway. They have released five albums so far. This weekend I am spinning their latest release 'Fragments' of the 5th Element' (2019). The music is rooted in 70's style symphonic prog with some similarities to The Flower Kings.

Thieves' Kitchen was founded in the UK in 1999 and have released seven albums so far. Their latest release from 2019 is called 'Genius Loci'. The music can be described as ambitious progressive rock with a jazzy vibe. I am spinning excerpts of this album.

Unitopia - Covered Mirror Vol. 1 Smooth as Silk (2012)

Unitopia was an Australian progressive rock band, who released four albums between 2005 and 2012. Their music is strongly rooted into 70's progressive rock with a modern touch. This weekend I am presenting you their last album 'Covered Mirror Vol. 1 Smooth as Silk (2012)', which solely consists of cover versions of bands like Genesis, Yes, Supertramp, Marillion and others. The strength of their interpretations is that they do not just simply play the songs, but they really give the songs their own sound. Sometimes they sound even better than the originals.

Unfortunately there never was a volume two. They disbanded after this album and formed other bands (United Progressive Fraternity, Southern Empire).

Transatlantic - Kaleidoscope (2014)

In 2014 Transatlantic released the album "Kaleidoscope" which became my favourite album of that year, and so it is one of my favourites of the past decade. The album basically consists of two long tracks plus thee small songs. But the two long tracks are the absolute highlights of the album and contains all the ingredients for a great classic symphonic prog sound, with influences of The Flower Kings and Yes.
I am spinning CD 1 of the album in its entirety. CD 2 consists solely of cover versions, which I may play another time.
