Unitopia was a promising Australian band who played great melodic modern prog rock. After they split up they formed two new bands, United Progressive Fraternity (UPF) with Unitopia members Mark Trueack, Matt Williams, Tim Irrgang and David Hopgood, and Southern Empire with keyboardist Sean Timms. Southern Empire has released two albums so far. This weekend I am spinning their second release "Civilisation". Southern Empire sounds in general a bit heavier than UPF.
If you are familiar with the music of UPF and The Samurai of Prog, where Sean Timms also participated, then you will notice some familiar tunes.

I thought there were only cows, meadows and mountains in Austria, but no, there is also great prog from this country! And the name of the band is Blank Manuskript! They were founded in Salzburg, Austria, in 2007, and have released four albums so far. This weekend I am streaming the latest release "Himmelfahrt", which means "Ascension". They play 70's style symphonic prog with jazzy undertones.

Paatos was founded in 1993 in Sweden by members of the bands Landberk and Agg. Until 2012 they have released 5 studio recordings and a live album. That year a tour was announced, but then the record company released the following statement:
"Dear Friends and Fans,
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we deliver this news to you… that Paatos will be cancelling their entire European tour in November due to a very tragic turn of events… The lead singer, Petronella Nettermalm’s sister has been hospitalized this weekend in critical condition..."
Unfortunately, the tour was never caught up, and it became quiet around Paatos.
The featured album of today is 'Breathing' (2011), their last album that consists entirely of new material.
It is difficult to describe the music. Maybe as a bunch of well composed and instrumented songs with female vocals and a slightly melancholic, haunting atmosphere, which evokes a certain fascination.

Seconds Out is a live album by Genesis. All songs except one were recorded in 1977 in Paris. Only 'Cinema Show' is from the 1976 tour, which featured Bill Bruford on the drums. The other songs were played with the line-up Phil Collins (drums, vocals), Tony Banks (keyboards), Steve Hackett (guitars), Mike Rutherford (bass) and Chester Thompson (drums).
It is the last recording with Steve Hackett as guitarist for the band.
Currently Steve Hackett is touring with his own band re-playing all songs from this album.

They were formed in Salzburg, Austria, in 2007 and have released four albums so far. I am streaming their album Krásná Hora (2019). Krasna Hora is a place in the Czech Republic and translates to 'beautiful mountain'. The music is influenced by prog rock of the 70's with a good dose of crimsonesque sounds. Why the band chose this Czech title for the album I do not know. Maybe they visited that place and felt inspired?

Barbara Gracey Thompson was an English jazz saxophonist. She was married to drummer Jon Hiseman of the band Colosseum. Due to Parkinson's disease, which was diagnosed in 1997, she retired. After Colosseum's saxophonist Dick Heckstall-Smith passed away in 2004, she replaced him and, with the help of new medication she was able to return to the stage to tour with the band. I saw Colosseum live with her on the saxophone, which was an amazing concert. Jon Hiseman passed away in 2018, and now with great sorrow I heard that also Barbara Thompson passed away on July 9th. Unfortunately, I do not have a recording of her, but I hope it is ok that I play Colosseum's masterpiece in memory of all three great musicians, Jon Hiseman (21 June 1944 – 12 June 2018), Barbara Thompson (27 July 1944 – 9 July 2022) and Dick Heckstall-Smith (26 September 1934 – 17 December 2004).

Moth Vellum is a short lived band founded in Los Angeles, USA, which only made one album in 2007, then disappeared. Porcupine Tree from the UK was formed in 1987, which started as a solo project of Steven Wilson. They soon became one of the most important prog rock bands in the third wave of prog starting from the 90's of the 20th century. In 2010 they went into a hiatus, in which Steven Wilson released a few highly acclaimed solo albums, and Gavin Harrison played with other bands, for example with the newly reformed King Crimson.
13 years after their last album Steven Wilson (vocals, bass, guitars) teamed up again with Richard Barbieri (keyboards) and Gavin Harrison (drums) to release the 11th studio album of Porcupine Tree.

The 2001 release of Yes: Magnification, is in my humble opinion the last really excellent studio album of Yes. It features Jon Anderson on vocals, Steve Howe on guitars, Chris Squire (R.I.P) on bass, Alan White (R.I.P) on drums and an orchestra, instead of a keyboard player. They later toured with Rick Wakeman on keyboards for promoting the album. They played this album also live with an orchestra, which was recorded for a DVD.
I am streaming the limited edition 2-CD box, which includes 3 bonus live recordings. Because the duration is too long for one show, I am playing only one bonus track: Gates of Delirium. The other two bonus tracks will follow the next time.

In 2011 the musicians Tony Levin (bass), David Torn (guitars) and Alan White (drums) came together to record an instrumental progressive rock album. The music resembles a bit the heavier side of the late King Crimson. This is my tribute to Alan White (14 June 1949 – 26 May 2022) R.I.P.
Alan White replaced Bill Bruford in Yes, shortly before the 'Close to the Edge' tour in 1972. He only had a few days to learn their repertoire. So we will listen to a live recording of 'Close to the Edge' plus some other tracks with Alan on the drums.

Paatos is a female fronted band formed in 1999 in Sweden by members of the Swedish bands Landberk and Agg. Between 2002 and 2012 they have released 5 studio albums and a live album. Some time after 2012 the band announced on their web page that they had to cancel a forthcoming tour, because the singer and violoncellist Petronella Nettermalm suffered a loss in her family. Unfortunately the band never returned since. This weekend I am playing my personal favourite album by them: Kallocain (2004). Dave Bainbridge is a guitarist and keyboard player, born in Darlington, UK. He played with Iona, The Strawbs and Lifesigns. Due to the pandemic situation he could not tour with Lifesigns, so instead he recorded the album 'To the Far Away'. The music is a fusion of progressive and Celtic rock elements. The album features Sally Minnear on vocals, who is the daughter of Kerry Minnear (Gentle Giant).
The first time I heard about Rachel Flowers was a few years ago, when YouTube videos showed her performing ELP and The Nice covers on a piano, which impressively demonstrated her piano skills. She then got acquainted with the members of ELP, and later she participated in the tribute to Keith Emerson concert.
Since 2016 she is recording her own records. This weekend I am presenting her third album release "Bigger on the Inside" (2021). She is singing and playing all instruments by herself. The music is a mélange of jazz/rock/fusion, with orchestral parts that reminds of film scores, but also some Motown sound can be observed.
Blind since short after her birth she soon became a child prodigy, similar to Stevie Wonder, but because of the strong influence of Keith Emerson on her keyboard playing she sounds, of course, much proggier.
This weekend I have challenged myself: I have tried to find the weakest tracks of my favourite albums between 2011-2020. As I call an album my favourite if there is practically no weak track on it, this was not an easy task at all. The result is a playlist of songs that I probably rarely play, as I usually tend to play the best tracks of each album. So come and listen and be inspired!
