UPF - Hope (2023) CD1

United Progressive Fraternity (UPF) started as a follow-up project after Australian band Unitopia split up in 2012. Meanwhile Unitopia has reformed and UPF became basically a project by Mark Trueack (Unitopia) and Steve Unruh (The Samurai of Prog). They have released three albums so far. The three albums are meant to be a Love/Loss/Hope trilogy, with topics centered around earth protection. This weekend we are listening to the latest and third album 'Hope', CD1 out of two. CD2 will follow another time. The music can be described as symphonic prog with lots of orchestral sounds and world music influences.

In concept very similar to The Samurai of Prog the core musicians are supported by a huge amount of guest musicians, among them Steve Hackett, Sean Timms, Ryo Okumoto, Jean Pierre Louveton, Rachel Flowers, Nick Magnus, Jerry Marotta, Elisa Montaldo, Jonas Reingold, Hasse Froberg, Lisa Wetton and many more.

Anekdoten - Vemod (1993)

Anekdoten was founded in Borlänge, Sweden in 1991. Since 1993 they have released 6 albums so far. This weekend we are listening to their debut album Vemod (1993). The music is influenced by prog rock of the 70's, especially King Crimson.

Purposeful Porpoise - The Water Games (2014)

The name of the band attracted my attention, a name that could have been directly taken from Alice in Wonderland! The US based band is a brainchild of guitarist, vocalist and composer Alex Cora. Originally, Purposeful Porpoise was conceived as a three-album project telling a sci-fi story. 'The Water Games’ was recorded live in the studio with the musicians, resulting in a live, organic feel that can only be created when artists play together live. Unfortunately, they only released this one album in 2014, and then were never heard of again.

This weekend we are listening to this one album wonder. The music is rooted in progressive rock of the 70's, with slight influences from Yes, Camel, King Crimson and Jean-Luc Ponty, and with a touch of jazz rock fusion.
